The first use of old-fashioned whiskey cocktail can be traced back to as early as the 1800s when it was made as a gin cocktail. Over time, it morphed into one of the first whisky cocktails. The cocktail holds its roots in Louisville, Kentucky and was first mixed at a private social club known as The Pendennis Club.

How to make an old-fashioned whiskey cocktail
Ingredients
- 1 thick sliced orange peel
- 1 maraschino cherry, with stem
- A tsp sugar syrup
- 2-3 drops whisky bitters
- ice cubes, as necessary
- 50ml/2fl oz Scotch or bourbon
- Twist of lemon peel to garnish
Preparation
- Take the orange peel and squeeze it with your fingers. Rub the peel around the insides of a whisky tumbler, then place into the glass.
- Add the cherry, sugar syrup and bitters, along with three ice cubes.
- Pour half of the scotch or bourbon and stir for about ten seconds.
- Dip in more ice then add the remaining scotch or bourbon and stir for 10-15 seconds.
- To serve, garnish with lemon peel.
Serve in a rocks glass.
