The name Gin derives from the French word genièvre and the Dutch word jenever. Both mean juniper. Juniper berries give the spirit its principal flavor. It is one of the most celebrated spirits globally due to its enormous variations in styles and of course, the cocktails.
Currently, the European Union classifies it into four major categories. These are Juniper-flavoured spirit drinks, Gin, Distilled, and London gin. Even though it is Great Britain produces this large category of spirits, it is worth noting that any country/city in the world with resources can make London Gin, and not just the English capital as otherwise suggested by the name. Beefeater, Tanqueray, Gordon’s, and the rest all originate from Great Britain. That’s their home and Great Britain reserves and deserves the bragging rights.
Depending on the region, the Alcohol by Volume levels (ABVs) of gin varies. For example, in the European Union, 37.5% is the least bottled potency. On its side, the United States, gin is as an alcoholic beverage of no less than 40% Alcohol by Volume.
Gin Cocktails
Gin probably has one of the most diverse cocktail portfolios. Almost anything goes down well with gin. Whether Martini or Gimlet or any other kind that tickles your fancy.
Fun fact: The GinTonic cocktail traces its origins to India in the 1800’s, originally used as an anti-malarial. This was after the discovery that it soothes the bitter taste of tonic water-the first drug. Cocktails may not be that bad after all.
